The aliens, or non-humans, of Johannesburg are referred to by humans in Alive in Joburg as Poleepkwa. Although there's been wide speculation that Poleepkwa is the name the species calls itself, there's no evidence that it's anything other than a name that the humans in Johannesburg call the aliens. The Poleepkwa are a spacefaring race of sentient beings, with highly advanced technology and spaceship engineering. Their reasons for coming and/or colonizing on Earth seem to be extreme poverty and mistreatment, as shown by the fact that they were, "living in conditions that were, really not so good", before their arrival on Earth. Not much has changed.
